–PRESS RELEASE–
FEBRUARY 13, 2017
Work on the $5.7 million East Norfolk Avenue bridge project is gearing up this week. According to Dennis J. Smith, City of Norfolk Public Works Director, mild weather is allowing contractors to start work that was originally planned to begin the first week of March.
Installation of a new water main just east of the intersection of First Street and Norfolk Avenue is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, February 15. The north lane of traffic on Norfolk Avenue will be closed through Monday, February 20, to facilitate the installation.
“Additional water main work and lane closures may take place the week of February 20th if weather permits,” Smith said, ”We ask that those who are traveling in the area use extreme caution.”
There will be complete access to all the businesses along Norfolk Avenue throughout the project that includes installation of a new bridge, a new trail under the bridge, a new waterline crossing the river and a new roadway section from First Street to Cottonwood Street. The new roadway section will have five lanes with landscaping, decorative lighting, and roadway lighting to tie in with the downtown business district.
The public is invited to an open house concerning the East Norfolk Avenue project on February 22, 2017 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the City Council Chambers at 309 North 5th Street. City staff, representatives from project engineer Olsson Associates and Dixon Construction- the contractors for the project- will be available to answer questions. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact John Heine, City Engineer, at 402-844-2020.
